Unplugged Weekend

This past weekend we had a completely "unplugged" weekend.  Back in the summer when I was having my yard sale I was complaining to Marty about how much work a yard sale is but necessary for me to be able to purge/part with the excess of what we accumulate.  I told him if I had something to work for it might make it worth it.  While working my yard sale one of my friends was talking about how she and her family go to the Amish Country every fall and stay in this charming little cottage/cabin.  She talked about how beautiful and relaxing it was.  I decided that was going to be my goal---to make enough at my yard sale to pay for a weekend at the Amish country toward the end of a busy fall when we needed to get away the most.  I made the reservation that weekend.

When we arrived on Friday night we were greeted with this sign on the counter, homemade snacks, and music playing.  Reese looked around and announced, 'Wow, these people like Jesus!"  There were scriptures around the cabin, Bible on the table, and various pamphlets about having a relationship with Jesus.

My favorite part of the cabin was the gas fireplace.  It was cold and rainy and would stay that way the whole weekend.  The fireplace kept the cabin nice and toasty. When we arrived, it was too late to explore so we stayed in and played board games.  The kids' new favorite is Pictionary.  I told them I was going to keep some of their drawings because they were really good! We had a blast playing Pictionary the whole weekend.

Upstairs was a loft with the bed where Marty and I slept.  We let the kids fall asleep up there but then we brought them down to the couches when we were ready to go to sleep.  They still came up to cuddle bright and early!

These pictures are kind of in a funky order just based on how I loaded them.  This was our view from the back of the cabin. There was a pond full of fish with a fountain in the center.

Looking up into the loft. It was super steep going up into the loft.  I would not be comfortable here with toddlers.

Exploring downtown Berlin on a chilly October day!

Emma's goal was to ride a horse and buggy. She got her wish and she grinned from ear to ear the entire time!

The Amish do not like their picture taken.  I didn't know this when I snapped a shot of the kids petting Shirley the horse.  I did notice later that he looked down as to cover his face after the fact.  It was interesting to teach our kids about the Amish and their culture during this trip.  They choose to live simply as to not be "conformed to this world".  The kids were probably most intrigued by their mode of transportation---the horse and buggies, and the occasional bicycle.

Reese is sampling some cheese at the cheese factory.  We had some pumpkin pie fudge there that was phenomenal!

Coming into the cabin

Fishing at dusk in the rain. My family is die hard!

Marty would later light a campfire here. He said it was to draw me out of the cabin.  I wasn't fishing in the rain but I did come out for the campfire!

The front porch of the cabin.

The cabin also had a grill which was handy especially for a family with food issues. Marty grilled steaks and potatoes one evening and it was delicious.

We were even able to do some furniture shopping.  We love Amish furniture. It is so well made and lasts forever.   Our bedroom set and our dining room set are from the Amish country. We continue to add on as we are able.  We brought home, ironically, an outdoor set for our deck this trip. We have been planning to buy furntiture for the kids' rooms for a while now. So, we picked out furniture for both kids' rooms from a lovely family and plan to order them in January to be delivered in spring when the weather is nicer.  This family has a business but no phone. They do have a voice mail system.  You can leave them a message but they will communicate with you through mail.  You would think that they wouldn't be busy with this set up but they are.  I guess its amazing how effective "word of mouth" is.

The best part was that we had no cell service or TV the whole weekend! I thought we would miss it but truthfully it was refreshing. Although the weather did not cooperate we had a relaxing time.
